Ian Sutherland - 1998
Ian joined Police in 1961 and served in Palmerston North for most of his 38 year career.
He was involved as a Police Association activist for more than 35 years, having served on the District Committee as a Delegate/National Councillor, District Chair (15 years) and Regional Chair.
Renowned in his capacity as Conference Delegate, he appreciated and encouraged comprehensive support and coverage for members through the Police Association. The Welfare Fund is but one example of immeasurable value for members and former members.
On industrial matters, Ian saw the value of a unified and well researched argument, the outcome of which members accepted irrespective of individual views. Solidarity in the ranks was often clearly apparent, even with an adverse finding.
Ian retired as a Sergeant in 1998, and was awarded Life Membership in that same year.
