William (Bill) Murray - 1985

Born in Cumbria, and emigrating to New Zealand in 1919, Bill was the first elected President of the New Zealand Police Association, with police at the time approaching him to take up the position.

Bill was the principal spokesman for the police delegates who met Peter Fraser at Parliament in 1936.

Bill remained in Police for 38 years, and was promoted to Detective Sergeant after only 16 years.  He also served as the Auckland District Superintendent, retiring from Police in 1959 at the age of 64.
