Crime Must Be At An Acceptable Level For Government

"The 1.7% increase in the Police budget this year, can only indicate that crime is at an acceptable level for the Government," Police Association President Greg O’Connor said today.

"Apart from the extra funding being tagged to specific initiatives one has to consider that it doesn’t even cover inflation so how much impact it will make on general frontline policing is questionable."

Mr O’Connor said, "It was pleasing to see that some recognition of the problems with organised crime and methamphetamine had been made, however whether $6.6 million over four years will be enough is questionable."

Overall however, Mr O’Connor said the budget was a disappointment for frontline police, and victims of crime, especially those in Auckland.
