Wallace Family’s Expectations Inflamed
"It is sad to see John Rowan continue to inflame the Wallace family’s expectations of a legal remedy for their grief when a four and a half week hearing clearly showed that Constable A’s actions were fully justified," Greg O’Connor, NZ Police Association President said today.
Mr O’Connor was referring to the lodgement an application to the high court to file an indictment against Constable A by John Rowan, lawyer for the Wallace family.
"It was clear immediately following the JP’s decision when John Rowan spoke of an Appeal that the Wallace family’s expectations would once again be raised, despite the overwhelming evidence in the four and a half week hearing that Constable A was justified in his actions that night," Mr O’Connor said.
"Now, because of those raised expectations, Constable A and his family’s lives will be on hold again – they will be unable to rebuild their lives and plan their future."
"There have now been three enquires - the Police Commissioner, the Solicitor General and two experienced JP’s have examined the evidence and found the actions that night justified," Mr O’Connor said.
"Police Officers are now asking - how many more will be necessary, before it will be accepted that Steven Wallace was responsible for his own actions that night?"
The Police Association will continue to support Constable A and his family, completely as this continues.
