About Us
The New Zealand Police Association (NZPA) is a membership-based organisation operating as a union and as a welfare provider that services police staff (both currently serving and retired) and their families. The Association represents the interests of police officers and police employees, across Aotearoa. NZPA has over 15,000 members and close connections with Australian associations.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Policy Researcher to join our Employment Services team based in our Wellington Office, in a full time, 9-month fixed term role starting in early 2026.
This role is pivotal in supporting effective campaigning and bargaining to improve members’ terms and conditions of employment. Experience in the fields of industrial, health and safety, economic, policing and justice matters is desired You will work closely with the Employment and Communications teams to deliver evidence-based insights and policy advice.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct research and analysis on, employment agreements and industrial relations trends, particularly remuneration and staffing matters.
Gather and assess data from a range of data sources (including our own) surveys, academic studies, and OIA requests.
Provide insights into pay structures, workforce economics, and comparative benchmarking.
Develop and evaluate policy options, supporting negotiations and campaigns.
Forecast workforce needs and assess the impact of pay changes on recruitment, retention, and morale.
Manage projects, ensuring timelines and quality standards are met.
Build relationships with unions, employer groups, government agencies, and members.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
Strong understanding of labour or employment policy, industrial relations, and collective bargaining.
Analytical skills and experience in data evaluation and policy impact assessment.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Political awareness and empathy for the policing environment.
A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in employment relations or related fields.
