With Cyclone Vaianu expected this weekend, here’s how to protect your property and make a claim if you’re affected.

Cyclone Vaianu is expected to reach New Zealand this weekend and may bring damaging winds and heavy rain.

We understand that weather events like this can be unsettling, especially while the cyclone’s path is still uncertain. Being prepared can make a real difference, and we want to help you take practical steps to stay safe and protect your property.

Below is some helpful guidance to support you and your household in the days ahead.

Get prepared

  • Make a plan for you and your household in case power, water, or communication services are disrupted. This should include at least three days’ worth of water and essential supplies. Visit getready.govt.nz/supplies for guidance.
  • Know the local radio station that broadcasts Public Emergency Information, and have a battery-powered radio ready.
  • Stay informed by following updates from your local Civil Defence group, Civil Defence Facebook pages, and MetService weather warnings (metservice.co.nz/warnings).

Protecting your property

If it is safe to do so, there are steps you can take to help reduce potential damage from strong winds, heavy rain, or flooding.

Your home
  • Move valuables, small appliances, and furniture off the floor where possible.
  • Secure or bring inside loose outdoor items.
  • Turn trampolines upside down if possible.
  • Retract or store shade sails and umbrellas.
  • Check gutters, spouting, and drains are clear.
Vehicles
  • Park on higher ground where possible and away from waterways.
  • Avoid parking near large trees or powerlines.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle and store them safely.
Boats (if applicable)
  • Check moorings and fittings are secure.
  • Secure loose items and close hatches and seacocks.
  • Ensure drains are clear and bilge pumps are working.

Staying safe around floodwaters

  • Do not drive through floodwater.

  • Do not start or drive a vehicle that has taken in water.

  • Treat all floodwater as contaminated.

  • Wear protective equipment if contact is unavoidable.
