Nominations for this year’s Police Association, Te Aka Hāpai Bravery Award close at the end of July. Members should notify their local committee as soon as possible about any brave acts they have seen, or are aware of, during the past year.

The Police Association established the Bravery Award in 2010 to signify peer recognition for outstanding acts of courage by members of Police, on or off duty. As only the most exceptional acts of bravery are deemed eligible, the award is presented only when acts that fit the standard have occurred.

In 2023, five Hawke’s Bay police officers – Detective Sergeant Heath Jones, Detective Constable Jaime Stewart, Detective Constable Patrick Noiseux, Constable Kurtis Maney and Constable Mark Bancroft – received awards for their efforts during Cyclone Gabrielle.

In 2022, Constable Sophie Allison and Detective Constable Jeremy Toschi received awards for helping to prevent a knife-wielding attacker from killing and inflicting further serious injury during a rampage in May 2021 at Countdown in central Dunedin.

The first officer to be honoured, in 2010, was Inspector Mike O’Leary, who rescued two children from a burning van after a crash near Taupō.

Awards were also presented in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
