Police Tennis Championship medallists and other competitors celebrate a successful tournament in Wellington.

After a three-year break, the Police Sport Tennis Championships returned with a bang at the end of February, serving up high-quality competition and plenty of camaraderie.

After a three-year hiatus, the Police Sport Tennis Championships made a strong return at the end of February.

Play moved indoors to the Renouf Tennis Centre as wet and windy Wellington lived up to its reputation. Despite the conditions, this year’s event delivered high‑quality competition, strong participation, and a great sense of camaraderie across districts.

A total of 16 players took part, including five women – the highest female participation the event has seen. Competitors travelled from Auckland, Christchurch, Wairarapa, Tauranga, and across Wellington to contest the championships.

Players competed in the men’s open singles, men’s social singles, women’s open singles, and men’s open doubles. The standard of tennis was particularly high this year, with several close matches and impressive performances from both established players and newcomers. The emergence of young talent, both male and female, was a highlight of the tournament.

The championships were not only about performance on the court, but they were also an opportunity for officers and staff from around the country to reconnect, network, and strengthen relationships. The positive atmosphere and strong sportsmanship helped make it a successful and enjoyable two‑day event.

Planning is already under way for the 2027 NZ Police Tennis Championships, which will again be held at the Renouf Tennis Centre around the same time.

All Police staff – whether competitive or social players – are encouraged to take part. Organisers hope to continue growing participation and fostering a fun, inclusive event open to all levels of play.
