If you have a house, car, contents or boat policy that renews on July 1, your renewal processes might look different this year. Our underwriter for these policies, IAG, has undertaken a process to capture and assess a lot more information about the risks that it covers.
If you’ve taken out a new policy in the past few years, you’ve probably noticed the number of questions we ask to gather information has increased. This year, IAG needs to know this extra information for existing policies before you can be offered a renewal for the coming year.
What does that mean?
Depending on how long ago your policy was taken out, we may need to ask you more questions. These might be for some, or all of, your policies if they were not taken out recently. To make this easy for you, we have designed a web form that can be accessed inside your secure NZ Police Association portal. If we need you to answer any new questions, we will email you with a link. There might be separate sets of questions for each policy you have with us. The number of questions will depend on things such as what you have insured with us, where it is and what your claim experience has been.
Why is IAG doing this?
Insurance works well when everyone pays a fair premium for their risk. Collecting more information allows us to ensure your property is correctly insured. No surprises at claim time helps ensure a better claim experience for you.
Haven’t I already answered the questions?
You might have answered some of them in the past, but we may need an update to allow for changes that could have occurred over time. New information and different understanding can come to light and we need to make sure that we’ve captured this.
What if I don’t answer the questions?
Your house, car, contents and boat policies expire annually. Usually the insurer is happy to offer you a new contract for another year (renewal). However, that isn’t guaranteed. The insurer could choose to offer you less favourable terms or discontinue your insurance. You also have a duty of disclosure at renewal, so if things have changed and you haven’t told the insurer, it could compromise your ability to claim. This process helps make sure that doesn’t happen.
When can I expect this?
We’ll begin sending out information requests this month. If you don’t hear from us, that means we already have the information we need.
What is the deadline to answer the questions?
We have allowed four weeks to give you time to collect any information you don’t have to hand.
If you have any questions, contact the insurances team at insurances@policeassn.org.nz If you are insured elsewhere and would like a quote, you can do this online inside the Police Association portal. Scroll down and click on the “Insurances” tile, then click on what type of insurance you would like a quote for – Life, General (home, contents, vehicle or pleasure craft) or Travel. Follow the prompts from there.
