Vehicle accidents happen, so it's important to make sure your vehicle is protected from any loss or damage. Our members can choose from full cover, third party fire and theft, or third party only insurance.

Full cover

Full cover allows you to claim for accidental damage or theft of your private car, caravan or trailer, plus liability cover for damage to property of a third party.

Your vehicle will be covered for its market value* at the time of loss. This means if your vehicle is damaged beyond repair or stolen, the cover will pay the market value of the vehicle up to the sum insured (whichever is the lesser).

Understanding Agreed vs Market Value

Agreed Value Market Value
is the maximum amount your insurer will pay for your vehicle. You and your insurer will come to an agreed value when you first purchase insurance, then it’s reviewed each year upon renewal. The agreed value should be enough for you to buy a vehicle with the same specifications. This is automatically adjusted each year. If you are not happy with the agreed value, please contact our insurances team. is the reasonable retail value of your vehicle immediately before it was damaged, lost or stolen, as set by an independent registered valuer. The amount is based on the condition of the vehicle immediately prior to the loss, its make, model, age, mileage, deferred maintenance and prior damage. This value will be paid out to you if your car is stolen or deemed a total loss, minus your total excess and any applicable deductions, such as outstanding premium or on-road costs.

New vehicle replacement

If we consider the car to be a total loss, we will pay you the market value* up to the sum insured as shown on the schedule, or, we will replace the car with a new vehicle of the same model and specification.  This is provided the loss occurred within 12 months of you purchasing the car new, and that the model and specification is available in New Zealand.

Excess

  • The standard excess is $400.

Imposed Excess

This is additional to the standard excess and determined by the underwriters based on relevant factors, such as driving record and type of vehicle.

Underage Driver Excess

  • Over 21 but under 25: $500
  • Under 21: $750
  • Inexperienced Driver:  $750

Inexperienced Driver - An inexperienced driver or person in charge of the vehicle is someone who has not held a licence for all of the preceding 24 months.

If you have selected the named driver option, any other drivers will have an additional excess of $200 applied.

Example: Applying excess on an Inexperienced Driver claim

It is important to note that any Underage Driver Excess listed under your policy is additional to your standard excess and any imposed excesses (accumulative).

In a scenario where a driver under 21 years of age, who has held an NZ licence for less than 24 months and is involved in an accident, the total excess applicable is calculated at $1,900:

  • Standard Excess: $400
  • PLUS Under 21 Excess: $750
  • PLUS Inexperienced Driver Excess: $750
  • Total Excess Payable: $1,900

International Driver Licences

Applications for where the owner/driver only holds a learner’s licence should be referred to NZI for consideration.

NZ applies increased excesses for drivers under 25 years of age on Learner and Restricted Licences:

Licence TypeCountryExperienceExcess
LearnerNew Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Japan, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cook IslandsAll$750
(in addition to other excesses)
RestrictedNew Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Japan, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cook IslandsAll$750
(in addition to other excesses)

This excess will be manually applied in place of the standard additional under 25 excess outlined in our Underage Driver Excess section above.

For drivers over 25 who have held a New Zealand licence for less than 24 months, an additional excess of $750 applies.

For drivers on international licences listed above, an equivalent full licence is treated as a full licence in NZ with no additional terms.

Other cover options

Third party only cover

This covers you for legal liability for damage caused by your vehicle to someone else's property. In addition, your car is covered up to $3000 for accidental damage and you will not have to pay an excess if the driver of the other car is uninsured, provided you can identify the driver and establish that they are completely at fault.

Third party, fire and theft cover

You have cover as explained in 'third party only' and in addition, you're covered if your car catches fire, or is stolen. Your vehicle will be covered for its market value* at the time of loss. This means if your vehicle is damaged beyond repair or stolen, the cover will pay the market value of the vehicle up to the sum insured.
