These FAQs relate to selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases under the Leisure Travel Insurance and Business Travel Insurance with an effective date of 1 December 2020.

Terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply and are set out in the Policy Wording. Customers should read the Policy Wording before taking out cover.

What will be covered when it comes to epidemic and pandemic diseases such as Covid-19?

There will be provision to claim for cancellation and medical expenses should the policyholder contract an epidemic or pandemic disease such as Covid-19 after purchasing their policy. If the policyholder contracts an epidemic or pandemic disease after purchasing their policy and can no longer travel, they will have the provision to claim for the cost of flights and hotel accommodation. The policyholder will also have cover for medical claims directly related to an epidemic or pandemic disease which will apply after they commence their journey if they contract that disease.

Does the cover include trip cancellation?

There will be provision to claim for trip cancellation only if:

  • the policyholder or their Travelling Companion are diagnosed with an Epidemic or Pandemic disease and cannot commence or complete their travel; or
  • the policyholder or their Travelling Companion are specifically ordered by name into mandatory quarantine or isolation by the New Zealand Government or any government or local authority, based on their suspicion that either have been exposed to an Epidemic or Pandemic disease.

It does not cover general travel disruption, including government mandated lockdowns, as a result of Covid-19. There is no cover for claims arising from any lockdowns or mandatory isolation that applies generally or broadly to some or all of a population, vessel or geographical area or that applies based on where the policyholder or their Travelling Companion is travelling to, from, or through.

Is there epidemic/pandemic diseases cover for Travelling Companions as well?

Selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases only applies to those insured under the policy. However, there is cover if the policyholders’ Travelling Companion contracts Covid-19 and the policyholder can no longer travel, or the Travelling Companion is specifically ordered by name into quarantine on the suspicion of having Covid-19. Travelling Companion is defined in the Policy Wording as follows:

Means a person with whom You have made arrangements before Your policy was issued, to travel with You for at least 75% of Your Journey.

If the policyholder is required to have a Covid-19 test to obtain flight and visa approvals, will this be covered under the policy?

There is no cover for Covid-19 tests taken out of precaution or as part of a procedure to arrange flights and visas.

Can the policyholder take out cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases on its own? Alternatively, can the selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases be added to an existing policy?

The selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases is not available as an add-on.

If there is a border closure following an outbreak and the policyholder cannot travel, can they make a claim under the policy?

No, the policy has a General Exclusion for government intervention and the policy will not respond in the event that the government calls for border closures

If the policyholder has had Covid-19, could they declare it as a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

Yes, the policyholder may declare Covid-19 as a Pre-existing Medical Condition if they have cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases under their policy at the time of assessment.

If taking the Medical Assessment by phone, the policyholder will be asked whether Covid-19 was presented as either an upper respiratory tract infection or lower respiratory tract infection. If the policyholder is unsure, they will be asked to find out from their general practitioner or treating doctor.

If taking the Medical Assessment online, the policyholder will have to specify whether Covid-19 was presented as either an upper respiratory tract infection or lower respiratory tract infection.

If the policyholder has undergone testing for Covid-19 but did not receive a positive test result (i.e. was not determined to be a confirmed case), this would not be considered as a Pre-existing Medical Condition.

Does the cover include lockdown or quarantine and isolation costs both in New Zealand and overseas?

There is only provision to claim for the cancellation of a trip, if a policyholder or their Travelling Companion is quarantined or ordered into mandatory isolation by the New Zealand Government based on their suspicion that the policyholder or their Travelling Companion has been exposed to an epidemic or pandemic disease. However, there is no cover for claims arising from any lockdowns or mandatory isolation that applies generally or broadly to some or all of a population, vessel or geographical area or that applies based on where the policyholder or their Travelling Companion is travelling to, from, or through.
